A PELE DAS NUVENS
05/19/2017 - 06/10/17
The series of drawings by Jorge Martins titled « A pele das nuvens » ( The clouds’skin) is an invitation where Drawings and Photographs meet, with no armor, nor alarming sound.
Indeed, we thought for a long time that, with the apparition of photography, paintings would become marginalized, an old memory. But it didn’t ! Paintings remained and Photography found its place as an Art in se.
Mesmerized by that doubtful context, Jorge Martins decided to select historic photographies, which each left a mark on our collective consciousness. He chose 68 of them, and transformed them with his own language ,his own vision of the world.
In black and white, the drawings and photographs inspire each other instead of copying themselves. When one is a Matter, greasing the paper, the other is captured on a mysterious surface. When one is practised in the daylight of a studio, the other is discovered in the darkness of a laboratory. When the first takes time, the second is captured within seconds.
But between the two disciplines, Jorge Martins only kept their complementarities His drawings always keep an accurate distance, seem involved in the other world with the right amount.
The drawn reinterpretation of these photographs are thus asking our memory to play a game, the game of the traces we will find in them. What is the input of the original images’ authors ? What portion relies on imagination ? What is the shared subject of both the photographs and Jorge Martins’s work ? Finally, what is the story we are talking about ? The photographer’s ? The artist’s ? Both ?
16 drawings of the project « A pele das nuvens » will be exhibited at the Kogan Gallery, from the 19th of May to the 10th of June.
The exhibition is part of « Lusoscopie – portuguese artists in Paris », an event created by the cultural center Camoes in Paris for the European Museum Night.

KOGAN GALLERY is pleased to welcome the art center CARPE DIEM ART and RESEARCH next March !
CARPE DIEM ART AND RESEARCH (CDAP) is a center for contemporary art and curatorial research based in Lisbon’s sixteenth-century Pombal Palace. Since Brazilian curator Paulo Reis founded the center in 2009, CDAP has presented multidisciplinary exhibitions and public programs that engage in the cultural life of Lisbon.
In 2017, the KOGAN GALLERY and CDAP became partners on the basis of common values and vision of the art market. Art creates a social bond, it is food for thoughts about our society and that is why it should be addressed to the greatest number of people.
CARPE DIEM ART AND RESEARCH organized itself in a way that allows them to remain open to a broad public and to encourage the creativity of numerous emerging artists, by selling affortable but high-quality pieces of art. These limited editions, made by the artists as a result of the residency program and offered the CARPE DIEM Art and Research, are made to generate the interest of new potential collectors of contemporary art. This project is thus a natural extension of the contemporary art center curatorial program and immersed in a strong new model of cultural sustainability.
From the 16th of march to the 1st of april, KOGAN GALLERY will exhibit about 60 limited editions from CDAP’s collection, and will organize a conference by its director and curator Lourenco Egreja on the 18th of March, at 3pm, to put light on the art center’s functioning and philosophy.
We, at the KOGAN GALLERY, like to think that these limited editions, hanged on our walls, are pieces of memories we will love to share with you.

From the moment we met the collective Inconnaissance, we have enjoyed discovering the work of their young artists. A work full of poetry, far away from the frenziness and the violence of so many aspects of the world they live in. We have been shaken by the lightness and the depth of the artworks, as if they were the products of isolated worlds, where silence is King and the nature occupies a particular spot.
Concepts and Intellect do not dominate here. They become quiet to give room to the artists‘ gesture and to our visions.
What is, deep down, this spirit devouring the artists, taking them far away from their and our daily life to get them closer to the creation? Would it be possible to define the outlines of this common denominator? The artistic approaches are different from one artist to another but each work allows us to breathe and contemplate our environment. Finally, isn’t the art of the collective Inconnaissance, from which we only chose a few pieces, bringing a plastic sense to poetry?
During this exhibition at the KOGAN GALLERY, we wanted to celebrate these powers artists share with the poets.

Can we unhabit each other ? Can we go live inside one another ? The answer yes seems suggested by Marie Obegi’s latest exhibition, « Vous m’habitez infiniment » ( translate You live in me to the infinite), shown at the KOGAN GALLERY in Paris starting from the 7th of september 2016.
Marie Obegi is a 24 years-old artist living in New York. Her work has so far been exhibited in the USA, in Beirut and in Peru. For this first exhibition in France, the young artist introduced us with a series of 5 diptychs. Besides the 5 portraits will also be presented engravings and an original edition in which the characters’stories are narrated. The three methods are well representative of the artist’s process, playing on her qualities as a draughtswoman to divert the norms of traditional paintings.
Because, above the obvious figurative caracter of her portraits, Marie Obegi urges us to think of the complex notions of Representation, dual identities and what they reveals of the Visible and the Invisible , by breaking down the paintings and their chosen frames.
This exhibition was imagined as an invitation. An invitation to discuss, to dream and to narrate. The curatorial choices should then lead you to spend more time with those characters than you would have ever thought of spending….

Robbie Cornelissen is one of today's greatest European
contemporary drawers. With the diligence of a surveyor,
he is high perspectives extend the field of vision until they go beyond the boundaries of the lines, and swallow
the viewer into the artwork.
The power of his drawings lies in ability to invite us toa journey which turns out to be an inner topic : everyoneknows what isto be discovered. Oniric and animal shapes, symbols of dreams, fear or desire lead the way and fill
up the space with fleeting apparitions.
Drawing is often a starting point in most artists' working process, who use this medium to create sketches or outlines of their work.
In Dane Patterson's approach, nevertheless, drawings are pieces of art in se.
Dane Patterson's technique is spectacular, so that the viewers are not only moved by the illusions he creates but also by his imagination which ends up envelopping us.
The latest series of works he presents at the Kogan Gallery from the 8th to the 15th of February 2016 brings together color and black&white pieces. They involve interlocked objects and upside-down interiors.
The choice and cutting of these objects, materially sourrounding us or mentally representative of familiar settings, succeed in mixing up different periods of time and yet reassure us. We relate to the objets in some ways, and in some others we cannot, since some things in life do not necessarily make sense.
In this series of drawings, the combinations created by making some drawn elements meet some others brings out the sculptural dimension of Dane Patterson's work. The paper sheet becomes a blank space , such as a whitecube, where 3D objects appear by surprise.
The surrealist inheritance in Dane Patterson's work is important. But here, the invoked surrealism feels a little tragic since the drawings try to make us realize we sometimes, often, indeed all the time, play an absurd game of life. But why not laugh about it ?

... J'Y DÉCOUVRE UNE FORÊT DE FEU
22/10/2015 - 19/11/15
Oak & veiled film rolls - 24x36cm - 1,2kilomètres
Installation in situ, price on request
In 2003, Andréa Vamos stumbled upon numerous film rolls in a bin. A few years later, in 2006, Vamos began a series of artistic experiences in the woods, which then gave birth to art installations where the film rolls and trees were meant to meet and tie together. Andréa Vamos then decided to photograph those interventions in the wood and call the project « Photosynthesis ».
The exhibition … j’y découvre une forêt de feu reveals for the first time Andréa Vamos’s art installations in a closed space, and displays the entire photographic archives of “Photosynthesis”, as well as some of her poetic texts.
By hosting these art installations, the gallery is bound to become a brand new microcosm evolving with the natural elements. The visitor is, by turns, lead to question the connections between the natural process and the artistic process, the fertile blend of a Substance and an energy, and the strength created by moving art pieces inside an artistic area.
The subtlety of Andréa Vamos’s installations, the oneirism of her texts and the esthetic strength of her photographs offers us a unique opportunity to dive into a contemplative, experimental and thoughtful state.

« La Sentence de la Corbeille » is an exhibition born from a reflection about the idea of « gleaning ». Different definitions of the verb « to glean » exist, but we decided to keep only one of them : « to gather crumbs here and there and take advantage of them. » We thus decided to turn a historical and social action into an artistic one. And if we can’t use the crumbs, they will end up in the basket…
For one year, six artists have worked together around this project led by the young curator Margaux Bonopera. The exhibition, associated with the KOGAN Gallery, diplays the result of this collective work.
The pieces of work have been specifically made for the exhibition and are the fruit of a constant dialogue between the young artists.
They are the result of a new way of working in collaboration. Each artist could choose the partners he or she wanted to think and work with. Thus, the exhibition presents 6 pieces, each of them bound to the other by some elements, images, various techniques and creative ideas they have in common. The goal of such project is to create pieces relying to one another and yet keeping their originality.
To conclude, the « Sentence de la Corbeille » tries to define a new relationship between the artists , their work and the public. It was made possible because every artist trusted and believed in what the others were doing. As the different pieces of work are linked together from the very beginning of their creation, it is easier to understand the connexions between the works from a topical, physical or simply visual point of view.
The pieces of artwork will be sold according to the principle of closed auctions : they will be given to the biggest gambler. The counting will take place on the last day of the exhibition, on Saturday 30th of May.

Inconnaissance is an acephalous exhibition gathering five artists drawn together by the multiple echoes they perceive in their artwork. Subjective expressions meet in this unspoken and undefinable zone.
Makiko Kamohara, Mathilde Le Cabellec,Jean-Marc Planchon, Émilie Sévère and Michel Soudée display their « inconnaissance » (a concept that could be translated by « ignorance ») through photography, drawings, paintings and videos. More than a concept, « inconnaissance » is synonym to space.
« Inconnaissance » lies in a chasm where the chests of words were left empty. It prefers the hollowed spaces found between inked letters. It is a deep night, a cloud, a scribble. It is too-ripe a fig, an utopia. Is is the letter A in « Aconceptual ».
Inconnaissance would be the surprising answer to a short sensory state where an unconscious choice is revealed.
« NPAI » reenacts the tradition of the last portrait but here, it does not represent a lifeless body, but a human being living his last days. Some of the key symbols used in traditional « last portraits » can be found in a series of photographs. What is different here is that they are used in a context which is running out empty : the hospital bed looks raw, unadormed ; the dying woman is alone, she is depicted full-face and not in profile as the tradition goes.
Dying, but still alive, she communicates with us. This only fact shocks, questions, and brings back the taboo surrounding these « last portraits ». Why ?
I had no developed answers, only remarks or feeling-driven questions « It bothers me… We shouldn’t deal with that…Did she agree with this ? »
As if people needed to give their consent before accepting my artistic project.
I personally think these images make us face something that scares us even though it concerns us all. This work must be appreciated in the broader context of the relationship eetween the model and the artist who accompanies her in the long run. This woman is my grandmother. I took photos of her for years and it felt natural to keep doing it up to the last moment, to better grasp her identity, in all its historical depth.

Anticipation was for us a second opportunity to introduce Robbie Cornelissen’s works. The first time, in March 2012, we successfully displayed his exhibition « Mémoires à venir » (Memories to come) for the opening of our gallery. The second time, between present memories and future ones, the exhibition Anticipation invites us to discover or re-discover Robbie Cornelissen’s artworks.
With the diligence of a surveyor, his high perspectives extend the field of vision until they go beyond the boundaries of the lines, and swallow the viewer into the artwork.
The power of his drawings lies in ability to invite us to a journey which turns out to be an inner topic : everyone knows what is to be discovered.
NEVER LOOK BACK

To celebrate its first anniversary, the KOGAN gallery chose to show a selection of drawings by Jorge Martins, one of the greatest Portuguese modern artists.
For 50 years, the basis of his painting has been a permanent research of the representation of space and light. His artistic development has never stopped linking the body and the concept, the visible and the invisible – an obsession he has in common with Gustav Klimt- the rational and the irrational, the encounting of which conditions the form according to him. This constent research urged Jorge Martins to create his own alphabet. His glossary made of forms and symbols is the common thread of his artwork and allows us to understand its syntax and memory.
We are thus very proud to show a selection of his exceptional work to our public, simultaneously with two exhibitions diplayed in Lisbon and Porto, a work that his friend the painter Manuel da Costa Cabral defined as a « pivotal ensemble, a key to understand all Jorge Martins’s artwork. »
« The sky is going to fall ! » What if Asterix had seen it all ? The world as we know it today may lose its mind this winter, in a radical way. At least, that is what is planned in the Maya calendar.
Numerous are the preachers who, at all times, have predicted a soon-to-be change. Whether it is the end of the world or not, there is no denying that the world is changing, at a faster rate.
The KOGAN gallery questions our future by introducing a selection of artists sharing their vision about the threats and challenges ahead.
Sometimes in a serious way, and sometimes in an amusing one, the exhibition « December 21st 2012 : What’s next ? » explores what is really at stake at the turn of the 21st century, stuck at the crossroads of a technological inflation and an increasing pressure exerted on the dominant culture the Enlightment created.
Environmentalism, demography, social organization, politics, spirituality.Everything will be affected by the change but the Maya calendar of course !

This group gathers artists and other co-artists. It has worked on a critical project about today’s society, culture and art, and conducts its artistic research in the fields of linguistics, logic, aesthetics, history and emotion. On this occasion, IKONOTEKST Group opened 4 laboratories : logic and language ; a new affective economy, art epistemology ; the environment and aesthetics.
Ikonotekstgroup listed the key concepts of post-modern art : SENSORIALISM, HYBRIDISATION, DE-SOCIALIZATION, NARCISSISM, OCCULTISM, ANACHRONISM, TECHNOLOGISM, NOMADISM, OBSESSION OF THE BODY, TRANSGRESSION, REJECTION…
Through iconic forms, this work highlights the relationships existing between contemporary art, finance, and neo-liberal policies. This shows how these notions can move from one sphere of our society to another and thus be found in art, but also in the luxury industry, in commercials or design.
Nowadays, this conceptual collection of works does not only belong to art or to theoritical thinking , because it is strongly embedded in social behaviors, in the political order, and in the financial sphere. Even if these conceptual exemples are all interesting when taken individually, the whole collection reveals a regressive concept of the world and society. That is the reason why we give this art the name of ART REGRESS.
